There are thousands of different species of ant but the most common ones in the UK are:
Garden Ants
(also known as Black Ants): Worker ants are 4-5mm long but the Queen can be as big as 15mm. The life cycle is mainly spent outside. Nests are usually found in damp soil under flag stones or airbricks, with an average number of ants per nest of 15-20,000. Sandy soils are especially attractive to this ant.
Pharoah Ants
Worker ants are between 1.5 -2mm long and the Queen could be as big as 4 – 6mm long. These ants are tropical in origin but have become a serious pest of some hospital premises and blocks of flats. This ant’s diet is largely of decomposing foodstuffs and it can carry harmful germs picked up when it has been feeding.
